上海人，中国古哺乳动物学奠基人。1950年获美国里海大学博士学位。主要开展古新世、始新世、中生代和第四纪哺乳动物研究，建立了中国新生代陆相地层划分的基本框架，并进行了洲际对比。参与了国家“一五”到“七五”计划和十二年科学规划的制定，是有关古生物学规划的执笔人之一。在选拔和培养学科人才、推动国际学术交流与合作等方面做出重要贡献。1980年当选中科院学部委员（院士）。曾当选北美古脊椎动物学会荣誉会员、国际古生物协会副主席，获北美古脊椎动物学会授予的罗美尔－辛普森奖。曾任古脊椎所第二任所长。

Dr. Chow Minchen was born in Shanghai and is the founder of paleomammalogy in China. He received his Ph.D. degree from Lehigh University, USA in 1950. Focusing on Paleocene, Eocene, Mesozoic, and Quaternary mammalogy, his research established a basic framework for the stratigraphic division of Cenozoic continental deposits in China and their intercontinental correlation. He participated in the formulation of the national first to seventh “Five-Year plans” and the 12-year Long-term Science and Technology Development Plan, and he coauthored related paleontology plans. He made important contributions to the selection and training of academic talent and the promotion of international academic exchanges and cooperation. Dr. Chow was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980. He was elected as an honorary member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in 1979, vice president of International Palaeontological Association, and was awarded the Romer-Simpson Medal by the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. Chow served as the second director of the IVPP.
