研究方向为地层古生物学。目前学术兼职有《National Science Review》副主编，《科普创作评论》主编，《古脊椎动物学报》、《中国科学》、《地质论评》、《Current Biology》等刊物的编委；现任现代地层与古生物学国家重点实验室学术委员会主任、中国科学技术大学人文与社会科学学院院长、全国政协常委等职，曾任国际古生物学会主席。2000 年国家自然科学奖二等奖（排名第二），2003 年度中科院杰出科学成就奖，2003 年全国优秀回国人员，2004 年科技部 973 项目先进个人，2006 年第九届中国青年科技奖，2006 年“新世纪百千万人才工程”国家级人选，2007 年度国家自然科学奖二等奖（排名第一），2013 年万人计划首批“杰出人才”，2014 年第五届全国杰出专业技术人才，2016 年何梁何利科技进步奖，2019 年美国鸟类学会荣誉会员，2020 年第二届全国创新争先奖。长期从事中生代鸟类和热河生物群、燕辽生物群的研究，有力推动了我国在相关研究领域的工作，并带领学术团队在鸟类及其飞行和羽毛的起源和早期演化、热河生物群各重要脊椎动物门类的演化、地层学、年代学以及生物群的综合研究等方面取得了多项重要的成果。
