Title:      When old sharks meet new technology

Sharks are among the most awe-inspiring fishes in the world, and they have an ancient pedigree extending more than 400 million years, but we know surprisingly little about their origins and subsequent evolution. Dr. Maisey, author of "Discovering Fossil Fishes" and "Santana Fossils", studies extremely rare shark fossils, including some of the earliest shark-like fishes, in order to discover answers to these mysteries.

How did these prehistoric fishes and other early vertebrates arise? How have they evolved in the long geological history of the Earth? Dr. Maisey obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of London (University College) in 1974. He has lectured widely on geology and paleontology, conducted numerous expeditions all over the world, published numerous research papers, and given talks on the Discovery Channel, Channel 7 Nightline and NPR stations. Dr. Maisey`s talk will be geared to a general audience for students, staff and professors alike.
