Establishing chronologies for evidence found in complex caves sites in the Southeast Asian region can be challenging. The application of only one dating technique with its associated limitations reduces the precision and accuracy of the final age. But apply multiple techniques can also be difficult. Techniques such as U-series dating are good at establishing the minimum and maximum age ranges of fossil evidence found in cave sediments or breccia to a high degree of precision, but direct association between the dating material and evidence to be dated can often be an issue. Luminescence dating can be applied to the burial sediments so offers better association with the fossil evidence but often has lower precision, while ESR can be used to date the fossil itself but often suffers from problems of leaching. What is required is the use of multiple dating techniques that are used in conjunction to reduce the effects of each limiting factor associated with each technique to enable a robust chronological framework to be established for the site. Examples of this approach will be discussed from Liang Bua cave in western Flores, Tamp Pa Ling cave in northern Laos and Lida Ajer cave in northern Sumatra.
