江苏张家港人,中共党员,古鱼类学家,我所第七、八任所长(1999.12-2008.02),1984年在南京大学地质系获学士学位,1987年在中国地质科学研究院研究生部获硕士学位,1990获中国科学院古脊椎动物与古人类研究所博士学位并留所工作,1993年至1996年期间在法国巴黎自然历史博物馆做博士后研究,1996年至1997年获洪堡基金资助在德国柏林自然博物馆进行合作研究。2021年当选为中国科科学院士。
担任《古脊椎动物学报》主编,《Zoological letters》 副主编,《elife》等杂志编委。
长期致力于鱼类演化生物学研究,在颌起源、硬骨鱼纲起源与演化、鱼类登陆等研究方向取得了一系列重大成果。
