出生于江苏省、江都市。现为中国科学院古脊椎动物与古人类研究所研究员。曾短暂从事中生代鱼类工作,目前主要从事中生代鸟类与热河生物群的研究,内容涉及鸟类的起源、鸟类飞行的起源和进化、羽毛的演化、鸟类早期演化和辐射等。此外,参与一些带毛恐龙、翼龙,生物地层学以及热河生物群演化与环境关系的研究。
